About the Award

The Award

The McDermott Scholarship is awarded for four years, including summers, while the McDermott Scholar earns a bachelor’s degree at UT Dallas.

  • The Scholarship is valued at roughly $175,000 ($291,000 for non-Texas students) and provides:
    • Required tuition and mandatory fees.
    • Stipends for housing and living (in their first year at UT Dallas, Scholars live in Honors Housing in the campus residence halls and hold a campus meal plan).
    • Development resources, including:
      • Weekly seminars and other cohort experiences.
      • Up to $15,000 of funding for study abroad and other engagement.
      • Program staff mentorship and support.
  • Scholars are members of the University’s Hobson Wildenthal Honors College and its Collegium V academic honors program.

The Responsibilities

  • Scholars actively participate in all aspects of the Eugene McDermott Scholars Program including,
    • McDermott First Year Seminar (weekly, year-round).
    • McDermott Summer of Service in the Dallas-Fort Worth area immediately after the spring semester of their first year.
  • Scholars maintain high semesterly (and cumulative) GPA requirements.
  • Scholars meet or exceed semesterly engagement hour requirements.
  • Scholars lead and serve continuously.
  • Scholars participate in a combination of full-time McDermott Program-approved activities during second and third summers (e.g., classes, service, study abroad, internship, research, etc.).
