Frequently Asked Questions about the EMSP Award

When do I get time off if McDermott keeps me busy during summers?

Scholars have university intersessions and holidays except during the first year when the spring-to-summer intersession overlaps with the McDermott trip to Washington, D.C.

May I graduate early?

No, the McDermott Scholars Program is a four-year commitment. Scholars often have enough college credit to graduate early but instead use the extra flexibility to add majors or minors and participate in experiential learning (study abroad, research, internships, etc.).

May I take a job for pay or in-kind compensation as a McDermott Scholar?

No, McDermott Scholars cannot work for pay of any kind. Exceptions may be made for Program-approved experiential opportunities that must pay a salary or stipend. Examples include professional internships, some research fellowships, and some campus positions.

Can the McDermott Award be stacked with other scholarships?

Sometimes. Third-party scholarships may be stackable with the McDermott Award. The Office of Financial Aid at UT Dallas will make the final decision based on the terms of the third-party award letter.

Institutional scholarships at UT Dallas such as the Academic Excellence Scholarship (AES)National Merit Scholars Program, Comet Scholars or the Terry Scholars Program are NOT stackable with the McDermott Scholars Program. If offered more than one, you would decide between them.

Is the McDermott Award different for international students?

No, but international students have additional costs (e.g., required health insurance and administrative fees) and a higher tax burden, which increase the cost of attendance. These additional costs are not covered by the McDermott Award and are the responsibility of the student. Visit the FAQ page for additional information.
